Hard disk test surprises for Google

The severe consequences of use and high temperatures on hard drive failure may be overstated, the report says three engineers of Google. The report examines the 100,000 units of commercial media, from 80 GB to 400 GB, used in Google since 2001. Company uses in maintaining the unit for caching Web pages and services.

“Our data show a much weaker correlation between the use and failures than previous work suggested that,” the researchers said. Different manufacturers and models, were included in the report, but a breakdown was not provided.

Widespread belief

There is a widespread belief that hard disks that are subject to heavy use are not used more than occasionally. It was also thought that hard drives Cool Preferred temperatures warm conditions. The authors wrote: “We expect a very strong and consistent correlation between the use of ad high and growing level of failure.

“But our results seem to paint a more complex picture. First, they are very young and very old group, it seems, shows the expected behavior. Hard disk is described as “not” will be replaced if necessary.

The report was compiled by Eduardo Pinheiro, Wolf-Dietrich Weber and Luiz Andre Barroso, and was deposited at the conference in California last week. The report said, Google has developed infrastructure which collected “vital information” about all the corporate systems every few minutes.

“In principle, forever”

The company collects information “is essential for good.” Google uses its own file system for data storage with low-cost hard drives on the market, rather than their own systems. Drives less than three years and significantly less likely than similarly aged hard drives that are not used often, the report said.

“One possible explanation for this behavior is the survival of the fittest theory,” the authors said, which is produced from the rumors that he had early in his life was out of the entire sample, and only the older, more reliable unit. The report notes that clearly show the trend “that lower temperatures associated with higher levels of failure.”

“Only at very high temperatures there is a slight reversal of this trend.” But hard drives, which were three years and older, and failure, if not used in hot environments, suffer.

“This is a surprising result, suggesting that indicates that the data center or server designers can have more freedom than previously thought when setting operating temperatures for devices with hard drives,” the authors write.

The report examines the impact of testing errors – problems found on the surface of the disk – in case of failure of the hard disk. “We found that the group unit of analysis errors in 10 times more frequently than in the group, which is not without mistakes,” the authors write.

He added, occurred after the first error, drives 39 times more frequently, within 60 days of reconnaissance units are not without fault. “
